Step 2: Examine It
Looking more deeply into the areas of our lives that have been previously hidden can truly be a source of massive breakthrough. Before diving in below, enjoy this quick encouragement from Adam.
“To examine life is to grow”
Now that we have identified the doubt or belief at the core of some of our actions in Step 1, we can examine it more thoughtfully.
There are two important things to figure out at this stage. First, where does this belief come from? And second, is it even true? Often it’s hard to be truly honest with ourselves when we’ve believed something for so long, so it may be helpful to ask for a person’s help that is safe, encouraging and who you trust. Like how Lauren mentioned she has been talking to her dad about the source of her fear.
When I looked at my doubt about surfing with one arm, I realized that I didn’t think it was possible cause #1 other people doubted it, #2 I had never seen it done and it seemed like it’d be really hard, and #3 I was unsure how to do life with one arm.
TAKE ACTION:
Doing the work is what is going to begin the change you need. So, take 5 minutes or 30 minutes… whatever time you have to invest. Write your thoughts down.
QUESTION #1
Where is this doubt stemming from?
Think about the cause. When did these thoughts begin? Perhaps it was an unexpected circumstance, or series of events that let you to this belief. Here’s a few examples continued from the examples I gave in Step 1:
EX A: I was rejected by a person I love, so I feel like no one will ever love me.
EX B: I have a hard time sticking to the things I know I need to do to get healthier, so I feel like a failure. Beyond that, change is hard and I’m struggling to make the changes I need to make cause it’s uncomfortable for me.
QUESTION #2
Is this true about me?
In thinking about this, you might consider these points: Would my friends say this is true about me? Is this evident in my actions?
We want to know… is it really true of who you are… at your core? Most often it’s not.
This can be a difficult step. But getting to the source of the issue is so important! Good job working through it. Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at what this mindset costs or how it benefits us to continue believing it.
