Secret Places

As a professional athlete I train in some way, shape, or form every day.

And while I have a great team supporting me, a lot of my training happens when I’m alone. Some of the greatest training gains I’ve experienced are the fruits of the time I spend pursuing my goals solo.

I think the same is true in many aspects of life. How we function when no one is looking will shape who we are. I’ve seen it apply in my Christian walk as I pray, read God’s word, dwell on scripture, seek His truth, and consistently attend church. What happens in secret, our alone time, the choices we make behind closed doors, the daily action we put towards our future and goals, these are the wonderful moments shaping our life–and even our trust and faith in God.

How we function when no one is looking will shape who we are.

It’s the daily; it’s the consistency.

Remember that our greatest achievements in life are much like sea glass – time and repeated trips in the saltwater produce a beautiful result. Similarly, our private time with God can create a beautiful trust and peace in our lives.

Remember that our greatest achievements in life are much like sea glass - time and repeated trips in the saltwater produce a beautiful result.

“But when you pray, go into your closet and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:6

I find this verse in Matthew to be compelling in so many ways, occasionally striking my curiosity about the purpose and power of praying in secret.

What are you doing when no one is looking? Try carving out secret time for God – daily – and see what happens. But also be your own advocate and reach toward your goals daily. Let’s live life dedicated, faithful, and meaningful everyday!

Being unstoppable means, what we do when no one is looking matters.

Pray with me:

God, I’m picking this spot and time for just you and me. Direct my thoughts, my desires, even my prayers to be aligned with your word: what I say in my head, what I think, what I allow my eyes to see, where I allow my feet to go… I know it all matters to you. Master the secret places, because I need you. Thank you, Jesus, for your faithfulness. -Amen
