Setting Fear Aside

No one is fearless.

If we expect ourselves to never feel fear, we will always come up short.

Our tendency as humans is to sin and do wrong and have fears. That’s why we need God and His grace on our lives. He carries us through in those moments where we have fears and doubts. He’s constantly trying to remind us that He already overcame everything we are struggling with by dying on the cross.

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.
John 16:33

We can have this ultimate hope in God through those times of fear and mistrust. There’s so much in life that can hold us back, but there’s also so much we can do!

Especially when we have a God who has conquered it all, we get the biggest head start over most of society. We can live confidently not on our own successes or works, but live fully and confidently in Jesus Christ!

I love this quote:

“If the fear of failure wins, we may never surprise ourselves.”

I could have been so scared of sharks, of being in the ocean and of surfing. I could have let my biggest fear of all – that I wouldn’t be able to surf again – stop me in my tracks. However, I was willing to try, to put myself out there and to potentially fail.

Bethany takes a wipeout

I didn’t know of anyone else who had surfed with one arm and so it was completely unknown territory. But, I’m so glad I was willing to try and get back on my board! Some days were so hard and so awful and I still have those days sometimes, but there’s always joy and good moments interspersed. If I hadn’t been willing to have those hard days, I wouldn’t be doing all the wonderful things I am today and I wouldn’t get to connect with all of you!

Sometimes there are situations that are genuinely really gnarly and scary so I don’t want to invalidate any of that. I encourage you to work through it and not to do it alone. Connect with people who can support you in it.

However, since we have faith in God, we don’t need to live in fear.

It’s easy to say and often hard to put into practice, right? This verse is a good reminder to me when I’m struggling with it.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

2 Timothy 1:7

I encourage you today to identify the fears in your life and give them up to God. The peace we receive from His amazing goodness truly is medicine for our souls. Because of His love, we can set our fears aside.
