Meet Laird Hamilton & Gabby Reece

If you don’t know Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece, I’m stoked to be able to share a bit about them with y’all!

Quotes are fun, so let’s start with a couple of “food for thought” quotes!

“Groove the pattern in your mind of learning” – Laird Hamilton

“If I flip me I flip my environment” – Gabby Reece

Laird and Gabby are legends in their respective sports, have been married 22 years, are raising three daughters, have a passion for health and wellness, and Laird especially loves adventure.

Laird Hamilton is best known as an American big-wave surfer and pioneer in the world of action water sports. He is also an inventor, author, stunt man, model, producer, TV host, fitness and nutrition expert, and adrenaline junkie.

Gabrielle Reece is a beach volleyball champion, the first female spokeswoman for Nike, a New York Times bestselling author, TV host, speaker, creator of HIGHX High Intensity Circuit Workout, model, and health and fitness expert.

They are such a “power couple.”

I grew up seeing Laird and Gabby around Kauai, and as a young woman I payed attention to how they lived out their sporting careers (especially Laird being a pioneer of big wave surfing), as well as other areas of their life. The level of accomplishment and expertise they have achieved hasn’t come without a lot of mental training, and if there are two gurus on the topic of Training Your Mind, it is definitely Laird and Gabby. I knew they would be amazing brains to pick apart, nerd out on, and certainly learn from. So I invited them to have a conversation with me about this for my Unstoppable Year Course!

From taking on insane physical challenges to pressing into their marriage and kids, Gabby and Laird display a mental strength worth examining.

“Train Your Mind” is one of 12 topics in the Unstoppable Year online course. I specifically chose this topic because I believe having a healthy mind and/or mindset carries over into every aspect of life! I’ve shared this quote before and it is so true…“What you think about comes about.”

Think of one positive area in your life. Step back and examine your thoughts about this area.  I’m guessing you think positive thoughts about the areas in your life that are going well, right? It is very unlikely that negative thinking about something will lead to a positive result.

In my honest and empowering conversation with Laird and Gabby about Training the Mind we discuss:
  • taking it one day at a time
  • focusing on what we can control
  • taking stock of your thinking
  • how to approach discomfort
  • responding vs reacting
  • living a life of gratitude

It has been so amazing to see GRATITUDE come up as an essential practice in every one of the Unstoppable Year topics so far: Being Present…Overcoming Obstacles…Optimizing Health…Blessing Others…Training Your Mind. There is obviously something powerful to practicing gratitude and in my conversation with Laird and Gabby we talk about how it is one of the best types of mental training you can do.

Speaking of gratitude, I am so thankful to Laird and Gabby for sitting down with me to impart their wisdom, practical tips, and great stories about Training Your Mind. Join my Unstoppable Year course to learn more, or take some encouragement from this post and start training your mind today!

I hope this post inspires you to be honest with what’s going on in your mind and to make some positive changes for your mindset!
