So when these times hit I keep reminding myself, “God is bigger than the emotion that I’m feeling right now.” Because I try not to steer my life by my feelings; rather I steer my life by Truth. But how do you lean into God’s truth when life gets messy? When insecurities come calling? When you experience something that makes you want to scream, “Enough already!”? Here’s what I know: emotions are real, but God is the ultimate truth.
We are created to be emotional beings. To feel the full range of emotions, which means a willingness to acknowledge not just the good ones but also the scary, ugly, not picture worthy ones. And I can do that without fear because God has the ultimate authority in my life and loves the work-in-progress me.
When you’re unstoppable, you lead your life by God’s truth, not by your emotions.
Here is something I can imagine He may say to one of His daughters in an emotional moment:
“Beloved Daughter – I love you. The whole person. I want to pour My love into the darkest, most broken, cobweb filled parts of your heart, mind and soul. I am sorry you feel scared. You can tell me everything. Tell me all your fears. Lay it all on me. I care so deeply. You are safe with me. Now, my beloved, meditate on my Words. Listen for the Truths I want you to know in this moment. Agree with the scripture fitting for this situation. I desire to set you free from this. You are forgiven.”
If you’re currently knee deep in life and it’s hard and nasty, and you’re struggling -not the struggle is real I need coffee struggle, but the how am I going to make it through this day struggle- I want to remind you: God’s truth is more powerful than your feelings at this moment and His love for you is steadfast. Remember the depth of His love is in what His Son Jesus has done for us all: died on the cross and conquered death. It’s this truth that brings us life and an eternal hope that is greater than anything we will face. This is what our Christian faith is founded in, and we can hope in this no matter what we are going through. And I encourage you to reach out to a friend and talk.
So, bring on the waves!
Psalm, 25:5, “Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”
John 8:32, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
(P.S….Here is my Wesley at 3 months *STILL* wide awake when he was supposed to be napping. Okay, he’s pretty darn cute, even wide awake 🙂 )
Here is a prayer I can lift up when I’m having an emotional moment:
Dear God, I love you. Thank you for loving me, the whole me. Thank you for forgiving me of my wrongs. Help me to not let my emotions get the best of me or overshadow your truth. Please pour your hope and light into the darkest, most broken, cobweb filled parts of my heart, mind and soul. Thank you for always being available and ready to hear me as I share my fears, and for letting me lay it ALL on you. Let your will be done in what I’m facing! Love, Your child
When you’re unstoppable, you lead your life by God’s truth, not by your emotions.
