Lieber Films announced this week a new title for Bethany’s surf documentary project: BETHANY HAMILTON: UNSTOPPABLE. The film, formerly known as “Surfs Like a Girl,” chronicles the life and athletic career of the inspirational professional surfer.
The 2011 hit film SOUL SURFER, starring AnnaSophia Robb and Academy Award® winner Helen Hunt, was inspired by Bethany Hamilton’s real-life experience and dramatized her courage and determination to get back into the water after the tragic attack.
UNSTOPPABLE will be Bethany’s complete and untold story that follows her journey from childhood into motherhood – the ups, downs and her powerful resilience against all odds to become one of the leading professional surfers of all time. In 2016 alone Bethany’s capacity to inspire reached new heights as she beat a six-time world champion and the top-ranked surfer in the world at a major competition. From chasing her toddler, to chasing the biggest waves, Bethany is continuously rewriting the rules on being a fearless athlete, and brings new meaning to the phrase “Surfs Like a Girl.”
The film is being directed and produced by Aaron Lieber. Jane Kelly Kosek of Meritage Pictures and Penny Edmiston (“Bones Brigade: An Autobiography”) are producers on the film.
“We started production with support from a Kickstarter campaign and were completely blown away by the passion and support of Bethany’s fans,” says Aaron. “She has inspired millions and we’re excited to be able to share her spirit, enthusiasm and life story with audiences all over the world.”
Production is underway in Hawaii, and the producers are currently planning a Summer 2017 release for the film and shopping it to potential distributors.
